May Round Up

Now into June and the weather has been exceptional for most races.

The team has been represented at Dunsfold for the first seven rounds predominantly by Jason, who has won one round and was most recently third in a small break. Simon McNamara has been 7th there two consecutive weeks now.

The regional championships were won on the Wally Gimber course by Steve Calland who came back from the Ras with some good form. Simon was best of the Wild Siders with 13th place in a very hot race.

The Kent Serrl 3 day stage race saw Roger, Mark, Matt and Graeme enter but only Mark finished the 3 days, in 24th place overall.

James Makepeace is now off the bike having had a shoulder operation where cartilage has been reattached that was torn from his accident at the Lincoln GP last year. THe joint has been tightend and cartilage in the scapula has been scraped clean. Hopefully no more dislocations.

Before the op James was focusing on Dunsfolds and ERRL road races, getting 3rd in two Dunsfolds, 3rd in the Ecca Festival from a race long break and finally 3rd in the 85 mile Beccles Road race in Suffolk. This race averaged nearly 27mph and finished in a bunch sprint after some very aggresive riding by some quality riders.
Graeme, Jason, Simon and Mark rode the Andrews Trophy RR in Essex with Graeme riding well inthe break to 5th.

The team is currently ranked 53rd nationally, and James is the highest nationally ranked rider, 10th (2nd cat!).

La Cantonale, 10th May 2009
Roger Smith, Simon McNamara, Mark Sussex and James Makepeace rode this 123km RR in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The terrain was rolling with 7 prime hills that were similar to South Downs climbs. Instantly no good for James! Ash Holding and Gary Moore came with the team to support.

145 starters with 43 being British of varying standard led to a nervy start as there were some very good quality french riders. After 3 miles in narrow twisty roads, a very nasty large accident took out probably 40 riders. THe accident was near to the front as the left hand side of the bunch slowed down. It was the anniversary of James' accident and as he heard the crunches behind he was relieved to have missed it. All other riders from Wild Side 707rt were not so lucky. Simon and Mark went down, with Simon ripping the hub apart in his Corima, Mark held up never to get back on. Roger chased for 10k.

The race was ridden at an average of 27mph which over rolling terrain was too much for James, who was dropped and had great fun getting into the convoy on the descents and getting back on in the valley floors. There is only so often you can do that though, and dropped out at half distance.

Roger did very well to keep in the front group that finished a few minutes behind the break of 6.

All in all a hard race. Photos courtesy of Gemma Makepeace

Maldon and District Road Races

Jason Edwards, Ashley Holding and James Makepeace started this race on Sunday 5th April with Chris McNamara travelling along with wife Semone taking some pictures.

Jason and James made the break that was created at half distance (110km race) and stayed away to the end. The BMC UK team were in force and controlled the break, at times by throwing water bottles at their own team mates(!) and one of them broke off to win. James and Jason were maybe tired from two Belgian races this week and finished 11th and 12th, last of the break.

Belgium 29/03/2009- WIJNENDALE

Six of us travelled to West Flanders on Sunday 29th to do this 120km race in a field of 180. It was an atypical sunny flemish Sunday with a slight wind, which helped to keep it all together. The average speed was 27mph for the 2hrs 40mins and all of us finished toward the front of the bunch, being placed equal 6th!

March Racing News

Chertsey 1st March saw a bunch sprint with Jason, Ashley, Mark and Simon in the bunch after not being able to great a break away.

March 9th saw Simon and Jason head to Essex for the Jock Wadley in what is always a hard race and one of the long established classics in our country. Ashley, Graeme and ROger remained in Sussex for a Surrey League. The weather conditions were grim, and Roger was unlucky to puncture with 4 miles to go out of a break that finished over 5 minutes ahead of everyone else. Roger got 12th. The Jock Wadley race was windy and tailed out as you would expect with Jaon and SImon safely in the bunch, taking some good miles for the Gomber in a week.

Most of the team went for a mid week Belgium racing trip on Wednesday 11th March to Adinkerke. A typical kermesse circuit in windy conditions sawthe race split to pieces at half distance. SOme useful high speed miles and racing experience for everyone.

The Wally GImber was obviously a big race for a team based in the south east. Simon was in an early break with Rob Enslin and Alex HIgham that went very hard from the off, the time gaps rose quickly, but it was clear the pace was too high. A break formed behind and this proved to be the one that stayed away. Roger got himself into this and rode well to 8th as Rob Hurd snuck away in the last few miles for the win.

March 22nd saw Simon go to Essex again for the Interbike RR e/1/2. Roger Mark and James (back from Chicken Pox) started out at Dunsfold for a Surrey League 2/3. Simons chain snapped after 5 miles and Mark had a nasty crash after 2 miles in Surrey. Bad luck for both.

Roger rode excellently to salvaging 3rd place in what was a cagey Surrey League race. It is this finish pictured at the top of this story. The commasaire stopped the race after a mile to talk to the riders about their riding.

The team heads to Belgium on 29th March.

Early Season Results and Images February 2009

Jason and Ash in the break at Chertsey

Wild Side 707 RTs first competitive appearance was at the early season time trial classic GS Stella weekend organised by Mark Jones. Roger, Simon and Jason were entered, but Jason did not start due to suffering with a cold. The Saturday event was the shorter tt to whiteways and back,

Sunday was the longer TT down to the A27 and through Arundel. Simon really put in a good ride here and improved his overall position with 4th in this tt. Mike Coyle won the race overall by 1 sec over Peter Tadros.

Perfs RR
After all the bad weather forecasts it actually turned out fine on Sunday morning the race was delayed for 30 mins to let the last bit of ice melt but it was bright and sunny.

Simon,Roger,Mark & Jason were on the start line, the race was quite fast and a bit nervous with quite a lot of traffic on the roads...

Jason got caught up in a crash and never made it back, mark looked comforatable throughout the race and stayed as near to the front as possible.

Roger looked strong and kept an eye on the strong men.

Simon put in a big dig with one lap to go and felt quite good, but never had much of a gap, so it was all together at the bell,

and then with about 3km to go 5 horses got mixed up in the bunch breaking it into 5 groups with none of us in the front group of about 25 it was race over..

simon rog and mark in the bunch, jay 1 lap early.

Chertsey 28th February

Jason, Simon, Roger, Ashley and James were at MOD property for the first Surrey League of the year. James was racing for the first time since May, though waiting for an operation on his shoulder.
The race was altogether and reasonably aggressive, with 10 laps to go a break of 12 went up the road with Ash and Jason there, Chris McNamara, ALex Higham, Toby Neave, Justin Hoy were just some of the notable members. The break never came back to the bunch and Jason went up against Justin Hoy in the sprint for the win, narrowly being beaten to 2nd.
SImon led out James from the top of the descent to the line for the bunch sprint, though he was well beaten by Jon Wager (Felt).
