The weather seemed a little bit better than of late wind wise and with rain in the air, there was plenty of oxygen to gulp in. I was pumped up for the ride especially after a big carb drink and two caffeine energy gels. Well into the ride and average speed was good but cars were getting the way at traffic islands. I was taking a few risks that many wouldn't but I was on one and wasn't going to let it go. The outward leg was into what wind there was and hit the turn with 29.2 ave speed. Again a car which seemed to be doing 10 mph was in the way. I overtook it attacking out the saddle and getting the speed back up. It was all or nothing on the way back. The ave speed slowly crept up and I was breathing like I had a bag over my head. Again cars and islands took off a couple of seconds as I had to check speed and build back up. Eventually I saw the magical 30 mph ave. Could I hold it as fatigue started to set in. All the islands and obstacles were almost out of the way. There was a 4 mile stretch of road were I was holding 32-33 mph. The average ticked up only a puncture could fail me now. Up the final drag of the slip road and down towards the last island were yes another car seemed to wait for me to arrive. I saw the clock tick past 48mins, I gave it everything in the last half mile. I crossed the line and looked at my computer.
The feeling was like Coventry city winning the FA cup again or winning the lottery. Back at the HQ my official time was:
49.29 for 2nd place. I took some good scalps with it. The winning time was only 20 seconds quicker by Andy Bason.
It was only when driving home after a couple of minutes that the elation really kicked in. I was shouting yes at the top of my voice and hitting my steering wheel. Any onlookers would have been a bit bewildered but I felt on top of the world. I'm just starting to come down now, the adrenalin has been racing.

I can remember when comp record was held by Engers at 49 mins. At the time it was an amazing time - I feel lost for words! |

Dave - if you've got the time, culd you do two things for us:
1) Tell us how you've progressed the club records down the years
2) Give us your PB's since you took up cycling
It'd be v interesting to see how you've progressed as a rider since you took up cycling
Once again, that's a storming ride mate _________________ Fashion over form, style over speed |

Wow! Nice one Dave, just goes to show you really have to stick at things to see the progression huh? I guess you must be looking at a sub 20min '10' before the season is out then? _________________ Fashion over form, style over speed |
